Mark Vanderheide

Mark Vander Heide grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan and is now an artist and arts educator based in Detroit. He has his BA in Sociology and received his MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art (2022). He has over a decade of ceramic education experience-working with all ages, from toddlers to retirees.

While primarily working in ceramics, Vander Heide also makes work in paper, in fiber, and in the kitchen. His tableware and quilting emerge from a place of play in the studio---making systems of color and pattern and form that are then interrupted and twisted; exuberance made physical with razzle-dazzle camouflage. His monstrous sculptures and illustrious paintings enter the mix as navel-gazing simulacrums, contorting realities, merging timelines, and manifesting ruminations of past longing, current fixations, and future dreams.
