CERAMICS

"I wanted to work in clay ever since I can remember, but didn’t “allow” that until a couple years ago, at Holland Area Arts Council. There, I fell in love with clay and also loved being in community with ceramic artists. I especially took to hand building, and particularly to pinching and flattened coil techniques, but I wanted more. I wanted to be able to work more, and be home more. I needed to develop a practice that was integrated with my life and sense of place. So I’ve set up a small, nest-like clay studio in my home in Douglas, Michigan. I can have morning walks on the beech that inform everything I do with the clay. Ideas for glazing are everywhere–dappled sunlight through the trees, silver pink slipping over the lake. Even though I consider my work, in part, an exploration of the “undertow” or how messy, ugly, and broken can sometimes undergird “beauty”, my practice is play, exploration and conversation with the feel and look of clay, colors and textures."
