Tom DePree

Holland, Michigan artist Tom DePree was born in Cairo, Egypt and spent his formative years in West Africa. His father was in the American Foreign Service and so Tom traveled extensively being exposed to a kaleidoscope of color, texture, light, and pattern. Coming back to the states, Tom attended Hope College where he received his BFA studying with Del Michaels. He then went on to receive an MFA from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Tom’s paintings are informed by primitive and folk art, the Fauvists, and the Expressionists, particularly the evocative psychological themes of the late Edvard Munch.
